Two books were choosen last month and the first book was The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak
This book went down very well with the group and most agreed it was very engaging and interesting. It had a good combination of history, relationships and characters and many people like that it incorporated a fig tree as one of its characters/as a narrator. People felt the the author wove a lot of layers into the characters including floors to make them more real, although some felt there wasnt enough details/depth, espeically of the mother in the present day. The history aspect wasnt to heavy or overwhelming but gave a good insight into the situation in Cypris and how people there would have been feeling. It also raised some good conversations around immigration and identity and feelings of not belonging even as a child of a immigrant.
Score 8/10
The second book was Some Kind of Fairy Tale by Graham Joyce
This book didnt get such a warm response, it had a good premise and was set up well but it just didnt go anywhere or live up to its potential. Some felt it was well written and flowed well while others really struggled to get on with it. There were parts that had some really lovely descriptions but there was a part in the middle that really dragged.
Score 5/10
Our next meeting is on the 28th April 2025 at 8pm and two book were chosen:
Three by Jennifer Jenkins
Land of Milk and Honey by C Pam Zhang

COMEDY: GEOFF NORCOTT Tour WIP
Sat 9th Aug 8pm
About Geoff
"He's a class act with a mature, sharp take on modern politics." - Sunday Times
As a rare right-winger, Geoff Norcott is a unique voice in British comedy. Having appeared on Live at the Apollo, Mash Report, Mock the Week and Question Time he’s built up a significant live following with sell-out Edinburgh runs and two national tours. Operating outside the usual comedic commentary on politics and social issues, Geoff has carved a real niche for himself. With a documentary, bespoke TV formats plus a UK and international tour on the horizon, 2019 is set to be an even bigger year.

ADAM ROWE
SAT 27th SEPT 7pm OR 9.30pm
Adam Rowe & Some Of His Mates
I'm currently working on my new hour. In the process of doing that; I'm doing these shows where myself and 2-3 mates will all be doing new stuff, some off notes. Each show I'll be on stage for a minimum of 30 minutes, usually about 45 and sometimes a full 60. The line-ups are class, so come down and see us. You'll see jokes in their absolute infancy before they go on to be proper routines and some that are already pretty good and basically finished. I don't enjoy any shows more than ones like these, they're the best.
